Thoughts on Fraser's Hill
A haunting trip to a hill town in Selangor.
We visited Fraser’s Hill two years ago. I had written notes with the intention of creating a poem, but I never got around to it. These days I’ve been feeling the pull of the written word. Painting hasn’t appealed to me lately because I am always running around or corresponding on my computer. There is something so efficient with writing.
I started writing poems in high school. There was a British boy that I was infatuated with; He was on a Radiohead mailing list and wrote deeply enjambed poems with crazy punctuation. Oh, I was so inspired! It makes me laugh to consider these shameless elements of my youth. But that inspiration took hold, and I started penning my thoughts down as poetry, if only to share with myself. And if only to inspire me to admire the poetry of others.
The notes of Fraser’s Hill sat on my phone for years, and I guess finally after coming back from Medan, I decided that they should become a poem.
This poem is about energetics, and the unseen.
Fraser's Hill, July 31, 2023
The road all to ourselves
Driving down the mountain
A mist devouring night terrors
An appearance at the bedside
Go away, I need to sleep,
Go away! Stop bothering me.
Cloudless sunshine
The hungry mist cools yet reaches into the bone
Fern tendrils curling upwards at the sky
Reaching
Reaching
Something is refusing to let go of what once was
Mist sun and those shades of green, corroding our efforts
Did you remember to ask for permission?
No… I forgot.
Silence, wind and cicadasI see you :)
